Fajne, tylko że cholerstwo bardzo małe- i niewiele się da przeczytać :/
Niewiele, np. to że Palin podróżuje po świecie i że jego ostatnią podróżą była Brazylia.
Da się też przeczytać, że Michael spotkał Dalajlamę...

Somewhere in the Ténéré Desert in Africa, a group of Tuareg tribesmen are making toasts with a hearty “Bottoms up!” in a proper British accent. That is because actor and former Monty Python member Michael Palin taught them how to say it. Though he is now a television presenter and documentarian with a new travel book on Brazil out in the U.S., Mr. Palin, 70, hasn’t completely left behind his days as a writer and performer for the British comedy troupe. And one day last week, over the phone from his home in London, he was recounting how he taught his fellow camel travelers the traditional toast. “After three tries they sounded like David Niven,” he says, laughing.

A few years after Monty Python’s final movie was released in 1983, Mr. Palin started traveling the globe, turning his trips into tales on television and in print. And while his latest book, “Brazil,” highlights the country’s vibrant scenery and the people he meets there, the main attraction is Mr. Palin’s own adventures. His televised escapades have earned him honors including Commander of the Order of the British Empire and president of the Royal Geographic Society, as well as audiences with world leaders such as the Dalai Lama, whom he teases just as well as the Tuareg.

The Dalai Lama “laughs at everything,” he says. Mr. Palin met him after the Dalai Lama had just returned from a trip to America. They were on the subject of jet lag and Mr. Palin asked if he was feeling well. “Head fine, stomach very bad,” he recalls the Dalai Lama saying. “I have to get up and go to lavatory all the time.” Mr. Palin says he replied, “That is quite enough,” which made the Dalai Lama roar with laughter. “That is the one thing that unites travelers of any kind,” says Mr. Palin. “The state of your bowels.”

Mr. Palin has conversations about the state of the world, too. For his most recent project in Brazil, which will go on to become a PBS series, Mr. Palin interviewed former Brazilian President Fernando Cardoso, who is often credited with the country’s economic turnaround. Whereas he says most political leaders are hesitant to say anything controversial, Mr. Cardoso was refreshingly straightforward. “I asked him, ‘Brazil has so many good things going for it—the people are friendly and relaxed, the economy is booming. Is there anything you envy about us in England?’ ” He was surprised by Mr. Cardoso’s answer. “He said straight out, ‘The rule of law.’ He said, ‘Our problem here is we have endemic corruption,’ ” says Mr. Palin. “I just thought it was incredibly honest for a world leader.”

Until his second act as a traveling scribe and on-screen guide, Mr. Palin had been known for his witty sendups of social peccadillos. Raised in Sheffield, he has lived in England all his life. He studied history at Oxford, and a year later married his now wife, Helen, with whom he has three children. His first big break was in “The Frost Report,” a 1960s comedy TV show. Mr. Palin was a writer on the show, along with several of his future Monty Python members, including John Cleese. After “The Frost Report,” Mr. Cleese called Mr. Palin to start “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”

Mr. Palin continues to think of ways to satirize the world today. “I would love to do something about the modern world, about technological conformity,” he says. “I see people who are just absorbed with their smartphones, and I sometimes think, ‘There’s a life being lived, an online life, which is quite different than what’s going on around them.’ ” He adds, “I’d probably do something about people who never look up and are just bumping into each other all the time.”

As for himself, Mr. Palin believes “it’s important to have direct contact with human beings.” It’s this impulse that has led him to go out into the world, where he makes a point of meeting locals and learning social customs.

It was the BBC that first convinced him to leave England in the late 1980s for the 2½-month tour that became the travel series “Around the World in 80 Days.” “Halfway around the world in Madras the director admitted I was the fifth person on their list,” says Mr. Palin, “but I was glad I said yes.” After that trip he returned to acting, only to go abroad again in 1991 to the North and South Poles. He gradually transitioned to touring the globe nearly full time. One benefit: Travel has enabled him to be more anonymous. “What I like about traveling is that you are the observer,” he says.

But no matter how far he travels, he can’t seem to fully escape his fame. Mr. Palin has been recognized everywhere from the upper reaches of the Norwegian fiords to the Diomede Islands in between Alaska and Siberia, where a group of Inuit elders escorted him down to an old fishing boat. The boat’s captain exclaimed, “Aren’t you the guy from Monty Python?” His fame didn’t help him in the Sudan, however, when he and a photographer were in Khartoum taking pictures of tall Nubian women in colorful outfits. A group of soldiers saw them, wagged their fingers in disapproval, and then started shaking Mr. Palin’s car back and forth until his group sped away to escape the growing mob.

Nor did his fame impress the wild boar that nearly attacked him in the rainforest as he left his hammock in the middle of the night. He was there visiting the Wauja tribe, a group of indigenous people who still wear traditional dress and cover themselves in body paint, yet make use of modern cameras and computers. Tourists give the tribe technology as gifts, and in turn they film the Westerners who are just as much a curiosity to them as they are to their visitors.

Lately Mr. Palin has been talking to Mr. Cleese in hopes of bringing his fellow Python with him on his next trip. His plan is to plant Mr. Cleese at a cafe in an unexpected city such as Vladivostok, Russia, or La Paz, Bolivia, and casually walk in and say, “Hi John,” to which his friend would respond with equal nonchalance, “Hi Michael,” and the two would head into the city from there.

In the near-term, though, Mr. Palin is guest-starring in a role in “Spamalot,” a King Arthur spoof created by another Python, Eric Idle, on the London stage. Mr. Palin is playing (in a prerecorded clip) God—and he admits he is excited about the role. “Only in my occasional dreams do I feel godlike,” he says.

Ja nie, gdzieś do 1973 roku dotarłam Wide grin

ciężko się to czytało, szczególnie że nie byłam wprawiona w angielskie lektury (to była chyba pierwsza poważna angielska książka, którą czytałam). Teraz może by mi lepiej poszło, bo przeczytałam kilkanaście książek w oryginale, z racji ich niedostępności w języku polskim. Jak będę na Święta w domu, to zabiorę klocka i znowu spróbuję.
